Five Tips to Help You Add Distance to Your Drives

Distance off the tee has always been a big conversation in today’s golf world and now with the rise of Bryson DeChambeau and his ridiculously long drives in 2020, driving distance is the hottest topic amongst tour players and amateur golfers alike.  If you’re like most amateur golfers, the idea of hitting a 300-yard drive is purely a pipe dream, but don’t let that fact distract you from the importance of adding a few extra yards to your drives no matter how far you normally hit it.

Adding an extra five to ten yards to your drives can be the difference between clearing a water hazard and having to take a two-stroke drop. It can be the difference between having a 5-iron second shot into the green versus a 7-iron. The point is extra distance off the tee is always a good thing and that is why you should implement the following five tips to help you add some extra yards on your drives.

1. Yoga & Stretching Routines

One of the easiest, and most enjoyable, ways to add distance to your drives is by incorporating some yoga or stretching routines to your workouts.  By adding flexibility and improving your core strength, you will be able to get more rotation and generate more speed in your swing. A higher swing speed will lead to higher impact and more distance. Adding flexibility will help improve distance on all shots, not just drives!

2. Use the Correct Driver Loft

Most standard drivers are approximately 10 degrees in loft. But using the correct loft can make all the distance in finding some extra distance off the tee. If you naturally have a high trajectory on your shots, then consider using a loft around 8 degrees to get the ball on a lower trajectory which would add more rollout at the end of the drive. The loft can be critical to adding distance. I would not advise using a 5.5-degree lofted driver like Bryson DeChambeau . . . leave that to the professionals.

3. Low Compression Golf Balls

If you’re an amateur golfer that doesn’t consistently add spin to your short distance shots and chips, there is no need to use expensive high-compression golf balls like ProV1’s.  Instead, opt for a low-compression golf ball that is designed to more easily compress under slower swing speeds and thus create more distance.

4. Use a Swing Trainer Device

There are many different types of swing training devices out there, but one that stands out is the SKLZ Gold Flex Golf Swing Trainer.  This very simple to use device helps develop swing tempo, while also providing a low-weight core muscle workout. As mentioned above, the core muscles are pivotal in developing swing speed and distance off the tee. This doubles as a perfect warm-up/stretch routine that you can do just before the first tee.

5. Practice, Practice, Practice

The only way to improve any aspect of your golf game is to practice. Head to your local golf course to use the practice range. Don’t be afraid to get the large size as the more practice you perform, the more consistent your swing will become. Consistency is key in golf and the one thing that will consistently add distance to any shot, not just your drive, is hitting the sweet spot of the club each time. Find a routine and stick with it. Before you know it, you will be out driving your friends in no time.

As Phil Mickelson would say, “Hit Bombs!”

Five Ways To Improve Your Touch On The Putting Green

Putting is the foundation of your golf game. Yeah it’s great to be able to pound 300+ yard drives, but guess what? A five-foot putt and a 300+ yard drive count the same on a scorecard at the end of the round. It’s why the classic golf saying, “Drive for show and putt for dough” rings so true still today. If you can consistently control your touch/speed on the putting greens, you will quickly begin to slash strokes off your scorecard.  For that reason, we have compiled a list of five great ways to help improve your touch on the greens so that you can start saving strokes in no time.

1. Practice Putting on a Wooden Floor

Some of the hardest greens to putt on for amateur golfers are fast greens. Well what is faster than a fast green? A wooden floor. If you can get a ball to consistently stop where you’re aiming for on a wooden floor, then you have excellent putting touch. Grab a ball and putter and find a wooden floor. Pick a spot on the floor and try to consistently putt the ball with the right touch to get it to stop near the spot on the floor you are aiming for. If you think this sounds ridiculous, just know that this is how Tiger used to prepare for the fast greens at August National.

2. Shorten Your Putting Stroke

One of the quickest fixes for putting touch is to shorten your backswing in your putting stroke. By shortening the backstroke, you are actually giving yourself more feel and control over the contact and “pop” that you provide the ball in the putting motion. More control = better touch.

3. Stare at The Cup Instead of The Ball

This is something that has been a drill for a while now but was really popularized by Jordan Spieth. If you’re noticing that your touch on shorter putts (10-feet or less) is not very good, try focusing on the cup instead of your ball when putting. It sounds crazy and doesn’t feel very comfortable at first, but it’s really neat how your body will actually adjust subconsciously to create a putting stroke that gets the ball where you’re looking. Just trust it and let your body be athletic!

4. Imagine a Five-Foot Ring Around The Cup on Lag Putts

When you have a long putt (usually over 30+ feet), we call it a “lag putt.” This is because with putts of this distance, you shouldn’t be focused so much on making it but instead on lagging the putt the right distance to give yourself a makeable two-putt. Longer putts are difficult to get the speed right, so it’s very helpful to picture an imaginary five-foot ring that surrounds the hole. Instead of focusing on making the long putt, just focus on getting it within that five-foot ring. Getting good at this will immediately help you avoid three-putts and thus save numerous strokes from your scorecard.

5. Be Consistent

The most important thing with putting is consistency. It’s crucial to have a consistent putting stroke that you can trust. It’s vital to have a consistent pre-shot routine before putting so that you feel confident and comfortable. Consistency in putting (like most things in golf) is key to saving strokes. When you’re bored or at work, take five minutes to grab your putter and work on making the same putting stroke over and over again. Believe me, it helps.

Good luck and enjoy your lower scores!

New To Golf? Five Things You Should Know Before Buying Your First Set Of Clubs

So you think you want to try out the sport of golf? That’s great news! It’s really an amazing sport and allows you to build new skills, meet new people, and enjoy the great outdoors all at the same time, so I’m certain you will become hooked in no time. But odds are you don’t have your own set of golf clubs yet.

What does a “normal” set include? Where can you find the best deals? What are good brands? These are all questions that you will likely have when making such a purchase. Thankfully, we’re here to will help provide some insight and give you five tips to implement when buying your first set of clubs.

Here are five things you should know before splurging on your first set of golf clubs.

1. Use Rentals To Make Sure You Actually Like Golfing

Before you go down the path of spending big money on any golf equipment, it’s beneficial to go to a local course and play using some rental clubs to see if golf is really your thing or not. Don’t be dismayed if you are not a great player at first as it will likely take months/years to become even an “average” caliber player. Try a few rounds with rental clubs first to see if it’s something you actually enjoy enough to pursue further.

2. Used Golf Clubs Are Much Cheaper

A new set of golf clubs can cost anywhere between of $300-$3,000+. That’s a hefty price tag for a beginner, so it’s advised to buy a used set first. Used golf clubs are still very high quality but will come with a dramatically reduced-price tag. Plus, the lower your initial investment, the easier it will be for you to spend more money on upgrades once you become more experienced and know what you want. You can find used golf clubs on many online retail stores or at your local secondhand sports retailer.

3. Most Sets Include The Same 12 Clubs

In golf you’re allowed to keep 14 clubs in your bag during the round. Most sets include the following: Pitching Wedge; Seven Irons (9 through 3); Three Woods (3, 5, Driver); Putter. As you can count, that adds up to 12 clubs, leaving you two extra clubs to customize your standard set. Many people add another wedge (60 or 58 degree) and another hybrid. Again, you can customize your set however you’d like, but this is the standard set-up for most new golfers.

4. Find a Putter You Really Love

Many golf sets come with a standard putter that is not really anything special. A putter is the club that you will use the most often during each round so it’s important to find a putter that really makes you feel confident and one that you really enjoy. Don’t be afraid to splurge on a putter if it’s something that you think could stick with you for the next 10+ years.

5. Keep Everything Standard Sized (for now…)

While your swing and skillset is likely going to change and improve as you continue to play the sport, it’s important to know the differences between certain aspects of golf clubs. A golf club shaft typically comes in three forms: (1) Flex; (2) Regular/standard; and (3) Stiff. As a beginner, it’s advised to stick with the regular/standard shaft for your first set until you know enough about your game to make adjustments. As your game evolves, you can make changes to what best fits your style/swing.

What are you waiting for? Go buy some clubs and enjoy!

Golfing on a budget _ golf tee time reservation software

If you’re reading this, then it’s probably safe to assume that you enjoy playing golf. But do you enjoy the large price tag that generally is associated with the sport? Whether it’s expensive green fees or just having to purchase new golf balls or clubs, the costs can quickly become excessive. The cost, particularly for novice golfers trying to adopt the sport as a regular hobby, may be discouraged by the associated costs. If you’re like me, you are constantly searching for the best deals on golf equipment and tee times to your favorite courses in an effort to save more money.  That is why I have put together the following list of things you can do to successfully golf on a budget.

Take Advantage of Twilight Prices

One of the best ways to save money during golf is to play in the late afternoon under what most courses call their “twilight rounds.” The twilight rounds are heavily discounted because of the likelihood that the sun will go down before you finish the entire round, hence that you will be finishing your last few holes in “twilight.” Even if you don’t get to finish your round due to darkness, the price you save in green fees means these late afternoon tee times provide excellent value.

Ditch the Golf Cart

Many courses these days will charge you the standard green fee to play the round and then add an extra cart fee if you choose to use a cart. Well choosing to walk instead of ride can save you approximately $10-15 per round. That may not sound like a lot, but it adds up much quicker than you think. Plus, walking the course provides you the opportunity to get more exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and really see the golf course. If you’re on a budget, start by ditching the golf cart.

Play Nine Holes

Sometimes you just don’t have the time or finances to play 18-holes, but that shouldn’t prevent you from getting out there and playing.  Almost every course offers a 9-hole rate that is substantially cheaper than the rate for a full round. Moreover, there are many executive par-3 courses available that are much cheaper than some of the nicer courses in your area.  Plus the executive courses allow you to really dial in your iron shots/distance.

Book A Discounted Tee Time

As golf continues to enter the digital age, it’s no longer necessary to call around to different pro shops in order to figure out who has the best deals on green fees that day. Websites like minutegolf provide quick and easy golf reservations from a wide variety of different courses all around Quebec and eastern Ontario. This allows you to quickly scan the courses in your area and find the hottest deals on tee times and reserve them online. Find your next tee time here and start saving money today!

Three Easy Ways To Get Your Child Interested In Golf

Three Easy Ways To Get Your Child Interested In Golf

Golf is an incredible sport to learn at any age, but there are some very real advantages to learning the sport as a child. Not only will your child learn the rules of the game and the fundamentals of a swing, chipping and putting, but it’ll also instill another set of values that golf preaches like honesty, patience, work-ethic, and sportsmanship.

Moreover, the first time you golf with your kids and when you’re also a golfer, it will help create a bond between you and your child the first time you take the course together. So where do you start in getting your child interested in golf? Let’s look at three of the best, and probably the easiest, ways to get it going.

1. Local Golf Course Camps/Lessons

One of the best ways to generate interest in the sport of golf for your child is to sign them up for any youth camps or golf lessons that your local golf courses may offer. Not only do these golf camps/lessons provide the basic foundation for learning the game of golf, it allows your child to feel comfortable at your local courses and build relationships with the staff at said courses. Another perk of these golf camps/lessons are that they are often lower price than hiring a private instructor and will sometimes provide free rental clubs as part of the lesson so that you do not have to make a big initial investment before finding out whether your child likes golf or not.

2. Keep It Fun!

A major challenge in teaching children a new sport like golf is that kids tend to get bored relatively quickly if things are too complicated or challenging. For that reason, it’s important to keep things fun as your child learns the sport.  A great way to keep things fun is to make a game within a game that makes the sport easier for your child. Instead of having them tee of from the tee boxes, shorten the hole for them by having them tee off from about 150 yards out on the fairway. It’s also be a good idea to implement games when practicing putting or hitting balls on the driving range. Whatever your ideas are just remember the key to generating interest in golf for your child is having fun!

3. Talk About (and watch) Golf With Them Often

It’s well known that children often look up to their parents as role models and want to mirror their actions. Follow this well-known learning cue and implement it with golf by bringing your child to the golf course often and talking about golf on a daily basis. Watching golf on TV, like the PGA Tour, is also a way for children to gather interest in the sport. Attending a local professional golf tournament is also a perfect way to get your child interested in learning the sport.

If you want your child to start gathering interest in golf, be proactive about getting them involved with youth camps/lessons at your local golf courses, make sure to keep it fun, and don’t be afraid to talk about golf and invite them to watch the PGA Tour events with you on TV or in person (if possible). Whatever you choose, be sure to enjoy building this special bond with your young golf partner.
