Women preparing for Golf for a Cause in July

The countdown is on and the excitement is building as we inch closer to the women’s 15th Annual Golf for a Cause charity day on Tuesday, July 31.

“Golf for a Cause is first and foremost a charity fundraiser for a great community organization and a terrific way to mix and mingle with other lady members. Don’t be intimidated by the golf, just sign-up for what will be a fun and memorable day at HGCC,” says co-chair Deb Cacioppo.

The charity of choice for a second year in a row is De Mazenod Door Outreach, a non-profit organization, located in Hamilton’s poorest geographical community at the corner of King Street & Victoria. It helps feed people of all ages, religions, and races.

Many of these people suffer from mental illnesses, addictions, are handicapped, and are profoundly poor.

Back for a second year as the event’s lead sponsor is One for Freight courtesy of David Carruth and anyone interested in sponsoring a hole-in-one or a hole still has time.

“We are growing. We are trying to keep up. With the warmer weather we are seeing a significant increase. We have a whole new set of people that we have not seen before. We are currently serving between 390 and 410 meals per day,” says program coordinator, Sherri Ramirez. “In the month of May (2018) we served more than 10,000 meals.”

Visitors are fed both breakfast and lunch, 365 days a year. They line up in rain, in snow, and on the hottest of summer days. They are welcomed and given sustenance and the dignity of kindness; one human being to another.

“I love it when community groups get involved with our program,” Ramirez adds. “You can live in Ancaster, Hamilton or a surrounding community and never realize that there are so many people in need in our inner city. It is a real eye-opener because people are very compassionate and want to help when they understand the need.” They have partnerships with schools, local parishes, community organizations, individuals and local businesses like Fortinos that make everything work.

In 2017 our Golf for a Cause tournament raised $33,000 that was used to purchase essential food items to keep De Mazenod Door’s pantries full and host three large sit down dinners a year in the school gym with gift bags of toiletries and sweets.

Golf for a Cause committee members for 2018 include; co-chairs, Deborah Cacioppo and Cathy Sullivan along with, Christine Heagle, Marg Scime, Lori Serafini and Jill Winch.

Golf for a Cause is an important fundraising strategy for the HGCC Foundation. It is part of the foundation’s overall mission, “Giving back to the community where we live, work, and play,” says co-chair, Cathy Sullivan.

“As well as providing support for our most vulnerable citizens, it provides an opportunity for the members of the Women’s Section to come together for a wonderful day of golf and socialization while supporting this great cause. If you are unable to play on July 31, there are other ways to support this very worthwhile charity – sponsor a hole, donate an auction prize, or make a financial contribution.”

Members are encouraged to drop off silent auction prizes to Meghan at reception before the July 24 deadline. Women who are participating are also being asked to please bring a bottle of wine or any unused gift cards that they are not using – both will be put to beneficial use as prizes!

“I enjoyed the entire day from start to finish. It was a beautiful day, the food was delicious, the event was very well-organized, there was a terrific selection of silent auction items available, monies raised went to a worthwhile cause, and I had the opportunity to golf with my good friends. Winning was a bonus especially as we are all ‘graduates’ of Johnalee’s Spousal Program,” says Rhonda Scott, who was part of last year’s

winning team along with Francine Pilon, Christine Muschalla and Robin Graham. “Four years ago, Maureen and Rachelle, the co-chairs at that time, reached out to me to join them. To be honest, if they hadn’t extended the invitation, I doubt I would have been comfortable participating. I quickly forgot all about being anxious and had fun. They made me feel so welcome that I actually joined the organizing committee the following year,” Rhonda adds. “I would strongly encourage anyone who has not yet participated in Golf for A Cause to consider doing so this year. The day is about friendship,

fun, and most importantly raising money for De Mazenod’s Door Outreach.”

Registration and Breakfast begins at 7 am with the shotgun start at 8:30 am. Cocktails, lunch, auction and prizes at 12:30 pm with a lovely take home gift of bottled organic golden honey for “BEEING SWEET” supporters

of the event.

The deadline to register is Tuesday, July 24.
